YUKON, Oklahoma – The public is invited to join the Canadian County Democrats on Tuesday, April 11, for a free presentation by El Reno High School coach, physical education teacher and motivational speaker Joshua Richey.
Richey also preaches at Rogers Street Church of Christ.
The Democrats’ meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Yukon Police Department, 100 S. Ranchwood Boulevard.
A native of El Reno, Richey played pro football from 2005 to 2008 and returned in 2010 and 2011 for teams in San Jose, New York, Seattle, Texas, Louisiana, Chicago and Oklahoma. He went to camp for the Canadian Football League.
“I played for coaches who were serving leaders, some were hardcore leaders and business leaders,” Richey explained. “So I took a little bit from each one and made it my own.
“That experience made me patient and humble, as well as able to understand the whole game,” he said. “It also helped me learn how to communicate with the unfortunate kids as well as the fortunate ones.”
Richey will talk to the Canadian County Democrats about the benefits and challenges that are part of working with public school students.
“We are losing teachers because of budget cuts,” Richey said. “We struggle in El Reno with funding for programs and facilities students need to be successful, and in the last four or
five months, we have had several suicide attempts.”
A dad with an 11-year-old daughter and six-year-old twins, Richey knows “what it means to work hard and achieve your goals.”
“I want to be able to provide for my kids, but the less fortunate kids and special education kids are in my vision -- they are strong in my mind.”
Richey played wide receiver and defensive back for the El Reno Indians football team and guard for the basketball team before graduating in 2000.
He graduated from Southern Nazarene University in 2015 and attended Northeastern A & M College in Miami from 2000 to 2001 and Northeastern State University in Tahlequah from 2001-2004.
The Canadian County Democrats regularly meet at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the Yukon Police Department, 100 S. Ranchwood Boulevard. For more information about Canadian County Democrats' activities, phone 405-354-3189.
