Scholarship Committee member Jerri Edwards (center) encouraged 2009 winners, Brooke Hardin and Melissa Haftek, both from Yukon, to enter the Canadian County Democrats’ scholarship competition. Each student won $500. The Democrats are currently taking scholarship applications for 2010 awards.

CANADIAN COUNTY, Okla. – The Canadian County Democrats are currently accepting scholarship applications from Young Democrats who are eligible to vote in Canadian County.

The Democrats will award up to two $500 scholarships this year, which is the third year the group has recognized student achievements with cash awards.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time at any accredited Oklahoma state-funded college, university or career technology center. High school seniors and first-time enrollees must be admitted for full-time enrollment for the next semester.

Applicants will be required to complete short essay questions and submit copies of voter identification cards, proof of active enrollment or letters of admission, along with their scholarship applications.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. on May 15. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Scholarship committee members are Carol Ruth and Jerri Edwards.

“In addition to encouraging good students to stay in school, our scholarship programs increase students’ awareness of the Democratic Party, strengthen Young Democrat organizations and increase membership in our county party,” scholarship committee Chair Ruth said.
