EL RENO – Maya Torralba, candidate for House of Representatives in District 56, will discuss issues and her election plans at the next meeting of the Canadian County Democrats at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 08. The meeting at Canadian Valley Technology Center is free and open to the public with seating available on a first come, first served basis. The facility is located at 6505 E. Highway 66 between Yukon and El Reno.
House District 56 includes parts of Canadian, Grady and Caddo counties, including Anadarko.
A Kiowa tribal member and resident of Anadarko, Torralba founded and secured grant funding for the Anadarko Community Esteem Project to empower teenage girls and increase youth involvement with both Native culture and community awareness.
She believes that Oklahoma should showcase and celebrate the unique cultures in southwest Oklahoma to boost tourism. Tribes and rural communities could also benefit by working together as Oklahomans.
Torralba is deeply committed to family. She is married to Brian Daffron, a professor at Comanche Nation College and has three children: son Chado, age seven, and a twin daughter and son, Kateri and Matthias, age five. She enjoys dancing with her relatives and honors veterans at the annual Kiowa Black Leggings Ceremonial at Indian City in October.
