Democratic supporters and guests from five counties turned out in full force on Aug 10 to welcome Democratic Candidate for Governor Jari Askins, to the Canadian County Democrats' meeting. The free event was upgraded from the regular meeting room to the main cafeteria at Canadian Valley Technology Center in El Reno.
"I think Jari Askins is going to be Oklahoma's first female governor," explained Shirley Burton from Yukon. "So I wanted my daughter to meet her."
Canadian County Democrats' Chair Jody Harlan made the event in a post-surgery boot one day after foot surgery, while Vice Chair Rodney Boegel led applause with his wrist in a cast following a traffic accident. Nearly every seat was filled with a great crowd from Canadian, Oklahoma, Kingfisher, Caddo, Grady, Logan and Washita counties and a representative from the national Democratic Governors Association.
The audience welcomed Lt. Gov. Jari Askins with a standing ovation and stayed to hear every word of her first speech in Canadian County since winning the Democratic nomination for governor on July 27.
"II didn't run because I thought it was impossible to win. I ran because I think it's necessary to win."
"We cannot balance the budget on the backs of people who need our help."
"If we don't take care of business now, we won't be the Sooner State. We'll be the Later State."
"I go home [to Duncan] when I can because I want to remember where I came from. I have a really long taproot that my parents gave me, and I don't want to forget to be the person you came here to support."
The Canadian County Democrats presented Lt. Gov. Askins with a check at the beginning of the evening and a generous stack of contributions collected during the event.
